Synthesis: "The Lottery" & "The Perils of Indifference"

"The Lottery" and "The Perils of Indifference" are both strong examples of terrible violence and inhumanity demonstrated by the most "ordinary" citizens. In "The Lottery", people in the little town are just ordinary people who live a normal life. Every year it is a tradition to have the people throw little stones and rocks at one person who wins the lottery. It remains unstated as to why people continue with this violent tradition. The power of a group of people can be very strong and convincing and can contribute to the violence and the inhumanity. "It isn't fair, it isn't right" Mrs. Hutchinson screamed out loud" as she was being stoned to death. Yet Mrs. Hutchinson could have stopped the violent tradition last year when it was happening to someone else. Last year, she chose to be a bystander and witness the acts of inhumanity and simply chose not to say anything at all. When it came time for her to be stoned, she made the statement of it not being fair. Where was she last year when someone else was in her position dieing? Mrs.Hutchinson was standing there, committing an act of inhumanity, probably not even realizing it. This short story contained a strong example of acts of inhumanity demonstrated by society and "ordinary" citizens.

In the story "The Perils of Indifference" Elie Wiesel talked about different situations of why people can be influenced in wrong acts such as the slaughtering of people. For an example world leaders are known to use propaganda to influence the public view on certain events. It allows for people to become indifferent. People are indifferent when they"avoid" awareness or a reaction to something. Elie Wiesel talks about how he wished that "leaders of the free world did not know what was going on behind those black gates and barbed wire" of Auschwitz because if they did, then "they would have intervened". But this was not truly the case, and this showed the indifference. Wars, suffering, disease, violence, famine are all happening but it is devastating to think that so many people have become indiffered to it all and feel like they are not able to do anything about it. Hopefully, the world has learned from some of these events and people will be proactive instead of indifferent.

Top Three

My pick is the top three hockey players from my point of view.
I'm judging these athletes with the following criteria: how many years they played, goals and assists of this year, plus and minus in the league as well as points.

1. My first pick would be Evgeni Malkin: Evgeni has played with the Pittsburgh Penguins for three years. He has a total of 114 goals, 185 assist and 299 points, Evgeni has a plus of 19 in 2008-2009 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. For these reasons I believe Malkin is an amazing hockey player. His talent is raw and his stats are the result of hard work and determination.

2. My second pick would be Alex Ovechkin: Alex has played with Washington Capitals for almost four years. Alex made a huge impression over the NHL with 217 goals, 194 assist and 411 points in 4 years.Alex has a strong four years in his career and his plus-minus for 2008-2009 is a plus 12. Ovechkin possesses the strong qualities of a hockey player such as talent, strength, stamina, and determination. He is one of many players who would make a great role model for young kids and is very entertaining to watch.

3. My third pick has to be my favourite hockey player, Roberto Luongo. Lou has played for three different hockey clubs which include: The New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, and the Vancouver Canucks. Roberto has a total of 227 wins, 230 losses and 33 ties and OT games in 538 games. Luongo possesses the qualities that every goalie wishes to possess, such as strength, smarts, speed, and the ability to read a situation and react accordingly. He is the envy of many young hockey goalies and has had many accomplishments throughout his career.

Superpower

If i were to have a superpower i would choose to fly. I believe with this super power I would have many advantages such as dodging my opponent's and outwitting their smarts. I would be able to make it to destinations quicker and not have to deal with planes or any one of those airport troubles. Traffic is another problem which I could avoid if I could fly, and I would take advantage of this every time. I wouldn't put myself in danger of car crashes and other things if I could fly and I could also save time when travelling.
